“I first started hearing voices when I was a teenager. I went into hospital for a few weeks and when I came out I asked my best friend if I could stay at her house. Her mum said no. It turned out she’d seen a newspaper headline along the lines of ‘Schizophrenic kills’. She thought that I might pick up a knife in the middle of the night and kill my friend’s younger siblings or something. I lost that friendship forever.”
